Profusely illustrated with 155 color photographs and 111 black-and-white photographs. "In this sweeping look back at the people and events that have shaped America and the world, LIFE commemorates its 60th birthday as only the premier picture magazine can -- with fabulous photographs. LIFE has visited the White House of every President from FDR to Bill Clinton. LIFE has gone to battle during World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam war and the gulf war. LIFE has been at bat with DiMaggio, in the ring with Ali and at the backboard with Jordan. LIFE has jitterbugged, hula-hooped, discoed - and streaked. LIFE has witnessed earthquakes, floods and famines -- and seen the atom bomb explode, babies conceived in test tubes, and men walk on the moon. LIFE has sung with Sinatra, Presley, Pavarotti and the Beatles, and has rubbed elbows with all the Hollywood greats: Gable, Stewart and Brando, the Hepburns (both Audrey and Kate), Loren, Monroe, and so many more. LIFE Sixty Years is a history of LIFE . and of life. Wars and wonders, entertainers and athletes, fads and fashions, Presidents and celebrations, disasters and discoveries -- they're all here. 155 color, 111 black-and-white illustrations." - from the inner front jacket flap.

Little Brown & Co, 1986. Hardcover. Book Condition: good. From Publishers Weekly\nPublished in celebration of BOMC's 60th anniversary, this is an attractive grab bag of literary snippets culled from the club's monthly bulletins. The arrangement, by decade, is somewhat haphazard, with authors turning up not always in connection with their best work but rather as they are chosen by the club. There are, however, some real rewards for the patient dipper among the "reviews," brief portraits and interviews: Robert Penn Warren on William Styron, for instance, Paul Horgan on Thornton Wilder, Glenway Westcott on Katherine Ann Porter, a delightful self-interview by Gore Vidal that makes almost everything else in the book seem a shade stuffy, a model reply by Dorothy Canfield Fisher to an earnest mother who complained about allowing The Hucksters (a now forgotten club choice) into her home. One is struck by how sturdily Henry Seidel Canby's estimates stand up over the years, sometimes in opposition to other members of the board. Few depths are plumbed in the collection, and more difficult authorsGaddis, Pynchon, even Barthare notably absent, but it is ultimately rather comforting to see the continuity of urbane taste displayed over the decades. Inglés, cartoné con sobrec, buen estado .
