According to its author, Francis Kelly Nemeck, 'Receptivity' is a study of what it means to be receptive to God, as found in the writings of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin and St. John of the Cross. The book deals with the problem of evil, particularly the aspects of suffering and death. Given the universal facts of suffering and death, the author stresses their positive and constructive contribution to the spiritual growth of the human person. Although this study may appear scholarly, it is nonetheless steeped in the life-experiences of St. John, Teilhard, and the author himself. John of the Cross (1542-1591) was born into dire poverty. He lost his father and a brother at an early age. As a youth, John worked his way through school, and when the plague hit Spain, he served as an orderly in a local charity hospital. At the age of thirty-five, he was kidnapped, tortured, and thrown into a dungeon by a faction within the Carmelite order that he was trying to reform. Emaciated by dysentery, John managed to escape after nine months of solitary confinement. He died thirteen years later after a long bout with osteomyelitis and gangrene. Teilhard (1881-1955) also knew intense pain, most of it emotional. As a youth, he survived several tragic deaths in his family. During World War I, he was a stretcher bearer on the front lines. He lost two more brothers and many close friends in the war. During his early forties, Teilhard was relieved of his teaching post in Paris and forced into exile because of accusations of unorthodoxy and heresy made by factions within the ecclesiastical hierarchy.

Softcover. Condition: Good. Reprint. The three outsiders are Blaise Pascal, Soren Kierkegaard, and Simone Weil. They were outsiders because they distanced themselves from the institutional church and also the societies around them in their respective eras. They believed that the church failed to take seriously the profound and disturbing relationship with God which is in Jesus Christ. From their position "outside they questioned the assumptions, practices, and understandings of their church and secular contemporaries. Each produced profoundly original but difficult writings (often in uncompleted fragments), which Professor Allen has organized and interpreted for anyone who asks the question, "How am I to be a Christian?.

Softcover. Condition: Good. The arts--merely entertaining or indispensable? The arts belong to the Christian life. And in 'The Liberated Imagination' author Leland Ryken explores the God-ordained significance of art-its nature and purpose in relating to truth and everyday life. For both artist and audience, for student, teacher, and critic, this book is a road to discovering how participation in art and the imagination leads to a more intense sharing in life's riches, a deeper celebration of all that God has created, and a new awareness of the wideness of his grace.

Softcover. Condition: Good. Reprint. The notion that there are two kinds of human beings, the strong and the weak, is dispelled in this helpful and balanced study of psychic strength and spiritual strength. We are much more alike than we may think, says Paul Tournier, the renowned Swiss psychotherapist and student of the Bible. What is different is the external mask that hides identical inner weaknesses and fears. All of us are afraid of others, of God, of ourselves, of life, and of death. What distinguishes us from one another is the way we react to our common distress. In vivid case histories from his notebook, Dr. Tournier illustrates the importance of self understanding in the advancement of healing in Christian freedom. He turns to the Bible to show that the Christian message of sin and grace helps us to accept ourselves realistically in the confidence that God has already accepted us in Jesus Christ. It is through the power derived from Him that we are enabled to find hope and freedom from fear. This book, with its refreshing insights into the parts played by psychology and religion in human problems, opens up new perspectives for people seeking self knowledge and provides an invaluable resource for pastoral and other counselors.

Softcover. Condition: Good. REP. This careful evaluation of the "problem of the New Testament canon" engages historical, literary, and theological questions often not raised by the general reader. How did this collection of writings come into being? What assumptions and intentions contributed to its formation? Who or what determined its contents? On what basis did special authority come to be attached to these writings? How does the character of this collection bear upon its interpretation? In what ways does this collection claim or exercise religious authority? After grappling with these basic questions, Gamble concludes: "The history of the canon indicates clearly enough that the contents of the New Testament were determined by the church on the basis of tradition.one cannot have scripture without also having tradition."
