Ntiz/) were a nineteenth-century literary family, born in the village of Thornton and later associated with the village of Haworth in the West Riding of Yorkshire, England. The sisters, Charlotte (18161855) , Emily (18181848) , and Anne (18201849) , are well-known poets and novelists. Like many contemporary female writers, they published their poems and novels under male pseudonyms: Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell, originally. Their stories attracted attention for their passion and originality immediately following their publication. Charlotte's Jane Eyre was the first to know success, while Emily's Wuthering Heights, Anne's The Tenant of Wildfell Hall and other works were accepted as masterpieces of literature later. Book
Cloth. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. Edgar Holloway (illustrator). 1st Spring Book Edition. The author, is not naive enough to suggest that if we only know where to look we can fill our homes with rare but inexpensive silver; but in confining himself mainly to eighteenth century silver such as is still freely obtainable, he points out that beautiful silverware can be bought through reputable dealers at not excessively outrageous prices and used in modern homes without appearing out of place or wilfully ostentatious. He intrdocues his book with a clear and concise explanation of 'hallmarks' - how to read them with a view to correct identificaion of date and locality. A brief explanation of traditions ascribed to silver objects in Tudor and Stuart times then ushers in his main therem - a description of the distinctive features of silver from the days of Queen Anne to Victoria - the austere style of the early eighteenth century, the intricate rococo of George II's reign, the neo-classic or Adam stye of the later Georges. He also devotes chapters to Scottish and Irish silver. Many of the fine articles described by the author are illustrated in the 90 line drawings and 28 photographs. A chapter on the tricks of the faker and the ways to detect forgeries provides a valuable and entertaining pendant to a refreshingly informative book. Illustrated. Some names probably to previous owner to inside cover. Slight browning to pages. Wear and tear to D/J.
