Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Old and New World Highland Bagpiping; John G. Gibson; McGill-Queen's University Press, Montreal & Kingston London Ithaca, 2002. Signed by the author. From the blurb Following up the argument in his previous book, Traditional Gaelic Bagpiping 1745-1945, John Gibson traces the shift from tradition to modernism in the old world through detailed genealogies, focused on how the social function of the Scottish piper changed and step-dance piping progressively disappeared. "Presents an overall view of piping patronage among the Scottish clans which has only been dealt with piecemeal in the past. Such a general survey has not been done before in such a comprehensive manner." Peter Cooke, School of Scottish Studies, University of Edinburgh. From the introduction This second book of mine about bagpiping brings together information about Highland pipers and piping from a large number of communities in Gaelic Scotland and from several in the disappearing Nova Scotia Gaidhealtachd (and sometimes from other parts of the New World where Highlanders settled from the eighteenth century onwards). The work ranges from the 1740s in Gaelic Scotland to within living memory in rural Cape Breton. It is an extensive if not exhaustive collation of data that reles generally on two kinds of sources, the written record in the Old World and the memory and lore in the New. This might suggest two distinct kinds of piper and piping, but the essential point is that as long as the piper fulfilled a Highland function the music was of the same character, based on the same musical concepts, on both sides of the salty divide. John G. Gibson, a scholar of Gaelic culture and music lives in Judique, Nova Scotia. This book, 424 pages is in fine condition in a fine dust jacket that is now in a protective mylar wrap.
