Besitzvermerk auf Vorsatz. - Paul Outerbridge Jr., der 1896 in New York geboren wurde und 1958 in Kalifornien starb, war Designer und Illustrator, bevor er zu Beginn der 20er Jahre Photograph wurde. Im Jahr 1925 ging er nach Paris, wo er für die französische Vogue arbeitete und bald zum Freundeskreis um Picasso, Man Ray, Duchamp und Strawinsky gehörte. Aus dieser Zeit stammen seine Mode- und Sachaufnahmen, die ihn als Perfektionisten mit höchsten technischen und ästhetischen Ansprüchen sowie als den eigentlichen Repräsentanten der kubistischabstrakten Photographie ausweisen. Um 1930 wandte sich Outerbridge dann - auf der Suche nach neuen, reizvollen Herausforderungen - der Farbphotographie zu, insbesondere der Entwicklung des ebenso komplizierten wie aufwendigen "Carbro-Color"-Verfahrens. Mit Hilfe ausgefeilter Techniken und beflügelt von bilderstürmerischer Phantasie entstand seine Serie erotischer Frauenbildnisse, deren fetischistischer Charakter unübersehbar ist.
