Octavo, illustrated tan cloth (hardcover), gilt letters, 308 pp + [iv] pp ads. Good+, with edgewear; atractively illustrated cloth binding is sound, interior is clean (save neat former owner inscription to ffep.) and bright. "Candace was coming up the hill with the washing. Under Candace, beneath the apraejo upon which he sat, was the back of Winfield Robinson's big black bull. On Candace's head was a basket which contained some of the clean clothes. On one side of the bull hung a small hair trunk in which were corded the Senor's shirts; on the other side was a s saddle-bag with bumping sides. Little Malcolm sat in front of his mother, much as he would sit upon the earthen floor of her cabin. He sat sidewise, his bare toes not overlapping the edge of the saddle, it was so broad. Generally Candace rode the bull without a leader, but as her load was unusually heavy, she had brought her eldest son, Sambo, to act as bull-driver. A bull-driver may lead the bull or may drive him from his seat upon the aparejo. Sambo walked about five feet ahead of the bull, leading him by a rope; the rope was fastened to a ring in the bull's nose. From the nostrils of the animal waved long strings of saliva; his body was wet; his sturdy legs were splashed with the mud of the valley through which he had passed. They made a picture as they came slowly up the rough, uneven path between the rows of banana trees, now flecked with shadows, and again emerging into the hot white glare. The old fringed leaves of the bananas arched over their heads, and met in places acros the path; their shade was grateful. Little Malcolm clasped Candace's dress with one hand; the other was laid confidingly upon the bull's rough neck, slipping back and forth in the shaggy hair as the great head swayed from side to side. Having reached the kitchen door, this modern though shadowy Europa slid off the aparejo to the veranda steps. Literature, Decorative Binding, West Indies, Caribbean. JBS.
