This book is set in the United Provinces at the open of the Twentieth Century, and closes shortly after the start of World War I. Part One deals with the coming of age of Jacques de St. Remy and his attachment to two boys of his same age. Part two, politics begin to put a strain on the friendships of youth. And part three brings irreparable damage, as Indian nationalism begins to divide friendships. Indigo is written with a compassionate awareness of the social, political, racial and religious issues that dominate the sub-continent.
