Suite à cette déclaration, il est contacté par un couple d'Autrichiens, Julia et Ulrich Falk, vivant dans un foyer pour personnes âgées dans la banlieue de Vienne, qui tiennent à parler pour la première fois de leur passé. L'histoire qu'ils dévoilent laisse Herter complètement abasourdi : les Falk ont travaillé au fameux Berghof, la résidence de Hitler dans le sud de la Bavière. Juste avant la guerre, Hitler leur confie une mission de confiance : élever le fils qu'il a eu avec Eva Braun, Siegfried, dont l'existence doit rester un secret. Les Falk s'occupent donc du petit « Siggi » comme de leur propre enfant et s'y attachent. Jusqu'au jour où Hitler prend au sérieux les rumeurs qui insinuent que la grand-mère de sa maîtresse était juive et ordonne à Ulrich Falk de mettre en scène un accident dans lequel le petit Siegfried doit périr.
