From School Library Journal:
Kindergarten-Grade 2?In this embellished version of the traditional English folktale, Mollie Whuppie, the female counterpart to Jack of beanstalk fame, tricks the giant and secures bright futures and good matches for herself and her two sisters. Although Muller has filled his story with many more details than traditional retellings, his pacing and use of language work to create an effective but inherently more didactic tale. He defines motives and manipulates the plot in an attempt to underscore the good-vs-evil dichotomy. With a nod to modern sensibilities, he has Mollie set off to see the world before settling down with the king's son. This narrative is not the tale, plain and simple, but takes pains to define the characters' roles in a story that exhorts the virtues of outwitting others at their own games, and turning adversity to advantage by doing unto others before they do unto you. Full-page ink and colored-pencil illustrations with occasional use of silhouettes are reminiscent of the art-nouveau style.?Corinne Camarata, Port Washington Public Library, NY
