From School Library Journal:
Grade 5-9-- Much information is compressed in the pages of these volumes. Space is both an introduction to astronomy and to the exploratory tools that help scientists learn about the cosmos. The functioning of land rovers, space stations, and space suits is also explained. The discussion cites recent findings about the planets as well as the space probes that made the data available. Machines traces the evolution and use of the earliest muscle-powered machines, such as the fiddle borer and the shaduf, to modern robots used on automobile assembly lines. Each facing page spread describes related equipment. Some unusual offerings are offshore-oil rigs, roller coasters, fire-fighting equipment, and tunnel-making and large construction machines. Both books feature two-page topic treatments with full-color illustrations and diagrams with labels and accompanying captions. They add significantly to the information. --Margaret M.
