This unique travel book deserves a wide readership. Carefully and thoroughly done, it represents the author's lifelong love affair with zoos and his personal visits to 53 major zoos within the past three years. Nyhuis gives valuable and practical advice on planning ahead: what to bring, where to go, and activities and educational fun for children. He devotes the main body of his book to "zoo reviews," which are arranged by geographic region such as the Great Lakes area, the Southwest, and West Coast. There is also a chapter on foreign zoos. Individual reviews include an extensive description of the zoo, a brief history, hours, admission fees, directions, entertainment, and featured exhibits, as well as address and phone number to contact for current information. A separate section focuses on wildlife parks, aquariums, and aquatic and theme parks. Appendixes include two lists of "top" zoos, one overall, and one by animals exhibited. Highly recommended for library collections that serve vacationers and travelers. Photos and illustrations not seen.
