Keith Moody's lucky year just might be 1941. Through it all, seedy Empire head Marvin Margolis plots around each new wrinkle with devious obtuseness to keep the production afloat, even when his leads join the endangered list. Hollywood. The 1940s. Screenwriter Keith Moody lucks into the perfect script: a biography of his war-hero cousin, Russell Keys. But before the film goes into production, Keys disappears, and someone blackmails the movie studio with information that Keys may be a murderer. Matthews' first mystery (he's the author of numerous mainstream novels, including The Wisdom of Stones [1994]) is an enjoyable combination of traditional detective thriller (to save the movie, Keith must find out what happened to his cousin) and Hollywood melodrama. There have been plenty of mysteries set in Hollywood, but this one never comes across as a rehash of other writers' material. Matthews approaches his subject from a fresh perspective (fans of novels set during Hollywood's "golden age," such as Stuart Kaminsky's Toby Peters series, will be very pleased), and his story is intricate--and puzzling enough--to satisfy anyone in search of a good thriller. A second Keith Moody mystery would be most welcome. David Pitt
