The book grows out of a multidisciplinary investigation of certain aspects of African agriculture initiated in 1966, but its genesis is much earlier than that. Bruce Johnston and I had been interested in African agricultural development for some time, and we were becoming increasingly aware of our own inadequacies when trying to understand why certain innovations succeeded and others failed. We were completely disenchanted with explanations of failure that leaned heavily on "peasant conservation: or "African consumerism. " While we recognized that there were social and cultural differences between African and Western societies, we ourselves did not have the expertise to judge how these differences might affect farmers economic resposess.
