; Charles B. Inlander, President of the People's Medical Society, is a highly acclaimed health commentator on public radio's
Marketplace. He is a faculty lecturer at the Yale University School of Medicine and writes regularly for
Nursing Economics, The New York Times, Glamour, and
Boardroom.;
Karla Morales, Vice President of Editorial Services and Communications for the People's Medical Society, has coauthored several best-selling books, including Take This Book to the Obstetrician with You and Getting the Most for Your Medical Dollar.
Inlander (The People's Medical Society Men's Health and Wellness Encyclopedia, LJ 5/1/98) and Morales, working with the People's Medical Society, have put together a reference guide that they call "a total family health strategy." In a very readable manner, the book outlines and discusses the best ways for a family to maintain its health, the business of health and healthcare, health needs and concerns for different family members, some medical conditions, and some complementary/alternative therapies. It follows the custom of other "Dummies" books by including icons highlighting jargon, warnings, and tips. According to the introduction, the book is based on reliable sources and has been double-checked, but the review copy did not include any references guiding the reader to further information. A useful complement to The Mayo Clinic Family Health Book (Morrow, 1996. 2d ed.) and the American Medical Association Family Medical Guide (Random, 1994. 3d ed.).
