Published last year in Great Britain as The Hub: Fighter Leader , this book joins other technical and/or historical accounts of the P-47 Thunderbolt, including two books by Freeman, Thunderbolt (Scribner, 1979) and The Mighty Eighth ( LJ 9/15/70). The only new slant here is that the information about the 56th and 479th Fighter Groups' combat and personnel is presented from the point of view of their commander, Zemke. Of special interest is Zemke's recollection of his time as a POW. This book is on a par with Marvin Bledsoe's Thunderbolt: Memoir of a World War II Fighter Pilot (Van Nostrand Reinhold, 1982). It makes good reading, but only libraries with in-depth military history collections should consider it essential. Photos not seen.
